AMI NYC Privacy Policy

AMI NYC was built civic-first. Here's the short version — and this is the truth, not just the summary.

  • We don't sell your data. Ever.
  • Your documents (ID, pay stubs, tax returns) never leave your phone. The Document Vault uses on-device secure storage only — nothing is transmitted to AMI NYC servers.
  • We don't share your information with HPD, HDC, NYCHA, or any landlord. When you tap "Apply," you go directly to the official housing portal — they collect your info, not us.
  • We collect the minimum needed to run the app: your email at sign-up, household size and income for AMI calculations, and which listings you've saved.
  • You can delete your account and all your data at any time, in one tap.

What We Collect

Information You Give Us

  • Account info: Email address (required). Optional: full name, profile photo.
  • Eligibility profile: Household size, annual gross income, optional dependents, voucher status, NYC residency, language preference.
  • Saved listings: Which lottery listings you've saved to your account.
  • Documents (mobile app): Files you add to the Document Vault are stored only on your device — never transmitted to AMI NYC servers.

Information Collected Automatically

  • Diagnostic data: Crash logs, device model, OS version, app version, IP address (used at the moment of the request, not stored).
  • Usage analytics: Aggregated, de-identified screen visits and feature use — used to improve the app, not to track individuals.
  • Cookies (web app only): Strictly necessary cookies for login and language preference.

Information We Do NOT Collect

  • Your contacts, photo library, or device location (unless you tap "Locate me" — used in-session, never stored)
  • Your documents in the Document Vault
  • Your application data once you tap "Apply"
  • Your race, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, immigration status, or any sensitive demographic data

How We Use Your Information

  • Match you with eligible lottery listings (eligibility profile)
  • Save listings to your account
  • Improve the app (analytics, crash logs)
  • Respond to your support requests
  • Email you about saved listing deadlines (opt-in only)

We do not use your information for advertising, marketing to third parties, or any commercial purpose unrelated to running AMI NYC.

How We Share Your Information

We don't sell, rent, or share your personal information for advertising.

We share only when:

  • You direct us to: Tapping "Apply" sends you to the official housing portal. We don't transmit your data — you fill in the application yourself on their site.
  • A service provider needs it to run the app: We use third-party providers for authentication, hosting, analytics, and email under strict data-protection agreements.
  • Legally required: Valid court order or subpoena. We will notify you first unless legally barred.

We never share with:

HPD, HDC, NYCHA, landlords, lottery agents, or any housing-related entity.

California residents (CCPA): We do not "sell" personal information as defined under CCPA.

EEA / UK residents: We comply with GDPR and the UK Data Protection Act 2018. Legal basis: consent (account, profile) or legitimate interest (analytics, security).

Security

  • TLS 1.3 encryption in transit
  • AES-256 encryption at rest for stored account data
  • Documents in the Vault encrypted on-device using OS-provided secure storage (Keychain on iOS, Keystore on Android)
  • Regular security audits
  • Two-factor authentication available on every account

If we experience a breach affecting your data, we will notify you within 72 hours.

Third-Party Services

AMI NYC uses the following categories of third-party services, each under a data-protection agreement:

  • Authentication provider — login and account security
  • Hosting provider — app infrastructure
  • Analytics provider — anonymized, aggregated usage data only
  • Email provider — support replies and opt-in deadline reminders

Children's Privacy

AMI NYC is intended for adults applying for affordable housing. We do not knowingly collect information from children under 13 (US) or 16 (EEA). If we learn we have, we delete it immediately. Email privacy@aminyc.com.

Changes to This Policy

If we materially change how we handle your data, we'll notify you via email and in-app banner at least 30 days before the change takes effect.
